In a feat that has been documented only once before, LiveAquaria’s resident pair of Mccullochi clownfish has spawned at their facility and the kinky couple did it all in front of a video camera. It was only last fall that F1 Mccullochi clownfish were shipped to the U.S. from the sole breeder of these fish in Australia and a good number of the Mccullochi clownfish were obtained by Drs. Foster and Smith at a considerable expense. In those nine months since the Mcc’s were imported, the expert fish handlers in Rhinelander have conditioned their fish into a breeding state (which may or may not have involved giving the Mcc’s a pair of black photon clownfish rag dolls). Clownfish tend to lay rather poor clutches of eggs the first couple times they spawn but in case you want to start a countdown for this clutch, the eggs were laid Sunday evening, and if all goes well we may be seeing some young Mccullochi clownfish being released from LiveAquaria sometime in the fall. Hats off to the livestock handlers over at LiveAquaria for their early success at breeding these extremely rare clownfish and we wish them the best in successfully raising some young black devil clowns.
