While on a visit toTwo Little Fishiesthis past weekend, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that they still have a steady supply of coral bones which is packaged in their Reborn media for calcium reactors. Not only did Julian Sprung assure us that his company still sources legally imported coral bones, but TLF also rinses the media, soaks it in R.O. water to leach out any residual phosphate and that snail and bivalve shells are also manually removed before being packaged in Reborn.

That media was the type of aragonite coral bones which is preferred by reef aquarists for use in calcium reactors and as a form of reef aquarium substrate. The snafu involved the interpretation of how large the coral bones could be to be imported without the use of the CITES permits.
Following the seizure of coral bones, Pacific Coast Imports and Caribsea no longer had a supply of our favorite calcium reactor media and they subsequently changed over todifferent types of aragoniteand calcium carbonate media. Although the domestic supply of coral bones was still enough to be able to source some bags here and there, it was no longer very easy to get coral bones for use in home aquarium. We are glad to learn that Reborn still uses the coral bones so that all reefers can have easy access to what we consider to be one of the best medias for use in calcium reactors.
