For most of our aquarium career we’ve mostly listened to music or unrelated spoken word podcasts while working on our aquariums. But this is 2022 and there’s loads of great content related to reef aquariums like theReef Therapy podcastwhich provides some edutainment while you make coral frags, clean your skimmer or test your aquarium water.
In our latest session of Reef Therapy Mark and I catch up on a lot of aquarium work and projects that we’ve both been up to over the last week and it never ceases to surprise us how often we’reengagedwith our reefing experience. Mark encountered some challenges while setting up a new shallow reef tank so what did he do to when he couldn’t finish his weekend build? He decided to set up a 3 gallon Pico tank on a whim and we personally look forward to hearing more about Mark’s growing family of aquariums.
For our part we discussed (attempting to)moving a fully established tank,setting up a saltwater pondto hold the new stock, and building a stand with aunique plywood design, all of which we already featured in individual videos. But with ReefStock Denver right around the corner we’ve also been doing a lot of cleaning and ‘curation’ of our dozen or so reef tanks and the corals therein because it’s just nice to have everything looking spiffy once a year, especially when there’s a chance of having lots of friends come over to see the tanks for themselves.
We wrap up the session by discussing laws and regulations which affect the aquarium hobby with some ‘explanation’ of what the proposed amendment to the Lacey Act (bundled with the America COMPETES Act) might mean to the aquarium hobby. Talking about how laws and proposed legislation might severely limit the aquarium and even the broader pet hobby is not fun, it’s not entertaining, but it is really important to be an informed citizen so you can help be part of the solution.
We got most of ourinformation from a livestreamby a youtube channel called Dav Kaufman’s Reptile Adventures and this is one of the most helpful discussions we’ve come across about the topic. There’s no silver bullet to opposing this amendment, signing an online petition isn’t really going to move the needle but everyone in the aquarium and pet hobby or industry should really watch this video to discover why they need to call their senators and express their opposition to the poorly worded amendment.
With that legislative housekeeping out of the way we have to say that this was one of our favorite Reef Therapy Sessions ever because we really just talked basic reef. It’s nice to have a topic to focus on and discuss in detail but sometimes you just need some related content to offer some catharsis while working on your reef tank and if you like this slant of reef talk, let us know in the comments of the Reef Therapy video.
