The video by Godehard Korp is certainly one of the strangest and most unique interactions between marine animals we have ever seen. The Mimic Octopus shown crawling on the muck reefs of Lembeh-Straits has a truly unique jawfish weaving in and out of its tentacles. We think the jawfish species could beStalix histrio, or the black-marble jawfish. Very elusive and almost nothing is known about the genus and this species,S. histriogrows to about only 2 inches or more. The coloration resembles very closely to the banding patterns on the mimic octopus. Coupled with the fact that it weaves in and out of the tentacles, one might get the impression that it’s using camouflage techniques to hide in the arms of it’s eight legged host. Coincidence or not? Well not much is known for now but it does seem to be a highly possible scenario.
